Dubai tram all set to begin trial run

The trial run of the Dubai tram is all set to begin today, with the RTA scheduled to carry out a technical run of the tram in the depot’s rails, and the test run will then be carried out along a distance of about 2km.

Each tram consists of seven coaches, with 11 trams due in the first phase of the tramway operation and a further 14 to be added later on.

The 14.6km Dubai Tramway extends along Al Sufouh Road in Jumeirah Beach Residence, and the initial phase of the project envisages the construction of a 10.6km long track starting from the Dubai Marina and stretching up to the Tram Depot near the Dubai Police Academy.

There will be 17 passenger stations, of which 11 will open in the first phase. Al Tayer said he expected the tram will carry about 27,000 riders per day at the start of operations in 2014 and the ridership is “bound to hit 66,000 riders per day by 2020”.

Dubai adds 2,950 branded hotel rooms in upbeat 2013

Hospitality market continues to perform well, with rise in ADR.

The UAE has the longest pipeline of rooms under construction with an additional 32,107 in the offing.

Dubai’s hospitality market has rapidly absorbed this influx of new supply and continued to perform exceptionally well, as RevPAR has only declined by 0.3 per cent, according to Ernst & Young’s Middle East Hotel Benchmark survey. Dubai’s new hotel supply in 2013  included several major five-star hotel openings such as the Ocean View Hotel, the Ritz Carlton extension on Jumeirah Beach, Sofitel Palm Jumeirah, Anantara Plam Jumeirah, Oberoi, and Conrad.

In November, Dubai’s overall average occupancy decreased by approximately 5.1 per cent compared to November 2012, however, average daily rate (ADR) increased by 5.6 per cent. Dubai’s hospitality market performance improved month over month in November, with ADR increasing from $330 in October 2013 to $333 in November 2013, which was coupled with an increase in average occupancy of three per cent during the same period.

According to STR Global, Dubai’s ADR growth of 9.9 per cent to $290.68 in November far outpaced the regional average growth rate. STR said that the UAE, which is already among the top five countries in the world for new hotel openings over the past five years, saw positive growth throughout the first 11 months of 2013. The country has the longest pipeline of rooms under construction with an additional 32,107 rooms in the offing.

The EY Hotel Benchmark survey noted that Abu Dhabi increased its supply of branded four and five star hotels in 2013 by introducing approximately 1,700 new branded hotel rooms primarily due from the Dusit Thani, Rosewood, St. Regis Nation Towers as well as some others.

“Abu Dhabi has witnessed a slight decrease in ADR in November 2013, dropping from $256 to $250 year on year, resulting in minor decline in RevPAR of 0.7 per cent during the same period,” said Yousef Wahbah, Mena head of transaction real estate at EY. In Saudi Arabia, holy city of Madinah and Riyadh’s hospitality markets registered a decline in RevPAR in November 2013 compared to November 2012. Madina’s RevPAR decreased by 35.7 per cent as compared to November 2012 figures, mainly due to low ADR in November 2013, which averaged at $158 compared to $214 in November 2012, coupled by a drop in average occupancy of seven per cent during the same period.

Holy city of Makkah also registered a decrease in ADR of 33.3 per cent in November 2013, compared to the same period last year, declining from $364 in November 2012 to $243 in November 2013. Riyadh’s hospitality market performance also decreased during the same period, as average occupancy declined by 16 per cent, in addition to a decrease in ADR from $235 in November 2012 to $209 in November 2013, resulting in a decline in Riyadh’s RevPAR of 33.5 per cent.

Occupancy rates in Muscat increased by 12 per cent with ADR dropping slightly by 0.4 per cent resulting in an overall increase in RevPAR of 16.5 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Elsewhere in the GCC, Bahrain experienced a slight  three per cent increase in occupancy with ADR declining by two per cent and RevPAR increasing overall by 5.3 per cent respectively, compared to November 2012. Doha saw a slight dip in its occupancy rates, with November recording a three per cent decrease and a 16.5 per cent decrease in RevPAR largely due to rates dropping from $289 in November 2012 to $252 in November 2013.

Wall Street falls as emerging-market concerns rise

Wall Street falls as emerging-market concerns rise.
Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange
(Reuters) - Stocks dropped for a second day on Friday and the S&P 500 posted its worst week since June 2012 as a selloff in emerging market assets fed through to wholesale pullbacks in equities.

The S&P 500 fell 2.6 percent for the week, closing below its 50-day moving average Friday for the first time since October 9, suggesting more selling may be ahead for the market that closed out 2013 with a 30-percent gain.

The day's decline was also the biggest percentage drop since June 2013 for the index, while the CBOE Volatility index .VIX rose 32 percent and registered its biggest weekly percentage gain since May 2010.

"There's definitely some nervousness. The world is suffering from the emerging markets' flu," said Michael James, managing director of equity trading at Wedbush Securities in Los Angeles.

Emerging market assets were hit by worries about slowing growth in China as well as political problems in Turkey, Argentina and Ukraine.

With many market participants expecting the Federal Reserve to decide next week to shave its stimulus by another $10 billion a month, investors also worried that interest rates will soon begin to rise. Fed policymakers will conclude a two-day meeting on Wednesday.

Among the 10 major S&P 500 sectors, industrials .SPLRCI fared the worst, down 3.1 percent, as General Electric Co (GE.N) lost 3.4 percent to $24.95 and Boeing Co (BA.N) fell 3.3 percent to $136.65.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 318.24 points or 1.96 percent, to 15,879.11, the S&P 500 .SPX lost 38.17 points or 2.09 percent, to 1,790.29 and the Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 90.701 points or 2.15 percent, to 4,128.173.

For the week, the Dow fell 3.5 percent and the Nasdaq fell 1.7 percent. The Dow's weekly drop was the steepest since November 2011.

However, investors were willing to pay more for protection against a drop in the S&P 500 today than three months down the road.

The last time the spread between the CBOE volatility index .VIX and three-month VIX futures turned negative was mid-October, shortly after a 4.8 percent pullback in the S&P 500 opened the door to the last leg of the 2013 market rally.

Worries over China's growth surfaced after a disappointing manufacturing number spurred the S&P 500's 0.9 percent drop on Thursday.

The Turkish lira hit a record low and the South African rand fell to five-year low against the dollar.

Argentina's government said Friday it would relax stringent foreign-exchange controls, after it abandoned its long-standing policy of intervening to support the peso currency. That resulted in the currency's steepest plunge since the 2002 financial crisis.

Going against the day's downdraft was Procter & Gamble Co (PG.N), which advanced 1.2 percent to $79.18, giving the Dow its biggest boost. The world's largest household products maker reported lower quarterly profit, but kept its 2014 sales forecast unchanged.

Volume was well above the average for the month. About 8.8 billion shares changed hands on U.S. exchanges, compared with the average of 6.6 billion so far this month, according to data from BATS Global Markets.

Maradona pledges sports championship for autistic children

Football legend Maradona pledged to launch a sports championship
for autistic children in Dubai on Wednesday.

Dubai: Football legend Maradona pledged to launch a sports championship for autistic children in Dubai yesterday.
“Sports are part of people’s day-to-day life and children with autism should not be deprived of this right,” said ambassador for the Dubai Sport Council Diego Maradona during a press conference.
The former Argentinean World Cup winner called on governments all over the world to provide autistic children with all the facilities needed to help them live a healthy, social and active life.
“I also plan on launching a sports championship just for autistic children. In fact, I promise that I will take the needed steps to do so and I will start on working on it in the near future.”
AdTech Ad
Maradona made the announcement during the conference that aimed to raise awareness about children with autism.
“This is not my usual area of expertise but as a father I did not hesitate to attend this conference. Those children need a lot of help not only from people in the special needs field. People in all fields should raise awareness about the issue.”
The conference was organised by the Autism Trust Foundation (ATF), which announced that it will reveal a 92 square metre billboard featuring 700 paintings by autistic children from around the world on Shaikh Zayed Road in April.
The billboard, which includes paintings by youngsters from 20 countries, aims to raise awareness about autistic children by showing the public their capabilities through artwork, said Fahd Bin Al Shaikh, Deputy Chairman of ATF.
Al Shaikh also revealed that 20 winners (one from each country) will then be invited along with their parents on an all-expense paid trip to Dubai a week before the award ceremony. Their paintings will also be showcased at Mirdif City Centre.
“We want to raise awareness among the public, especially among the parents of children who have autism, to show them that their children are capable and should be encouraged instead of being shunned by society.”
Major General Abdul Rahman Mohammad Rafi, Director of the General Department of Community Services at Dubai Police, said that a big contributor to the lack of statistics in the UAE about children with autism is parents not coming out with the truth about their children.
“In Dubai Police we have statistics about how many addicts we have in the country and the number of deaths. But where are the statistics about children with autism in the country? More awareness is needed on this issue.”
Major General Rafi hoped that the project will raise the awareness needed about children with autism.
